Childhood glimpses and some new lines

The poetic juices are starting to flow again, so here are a few lines penned in recent weeks...

An animal I loved was silent,
sprawled motionless all day
upon stacked pillows while my
young mind was filled with knowledge.
Sometimes she greeted my return
with a quick nuzzle,
but we both knew the best was
yet to come when,
bath and bedtime story behind,
she came to life with a shy bark
in the agile hands of the
master puppeteer.
Little did she know
our nighttime talks would
speak security into my soul,
shared giggles paving a path of
confident trust on which I could
walk for a lifetime.
A stubbled kiss goodnight and
fingertips brushing mine
brought the curtain down,
ushering me into the rest of

the beloved.

She carries a box of possibility on her back

Ambling across the station

Agile fingers trained by untold hours

Alone

     Listening

          Repeating

               Beginning anew

     Again

Hopeful

I long to follow

to where she will open it next

Knee-high child with the azure eyes

Blonde locks framing her smile alight

Bubbles with joy as her papa’s

Sure arms invite her to play

That age-old metro game of

In/dependence, trust, and daring—

He will not let her fall

Two boys full of life, wondrous mischief pulsing from every cell

A cup of juice splashes to the floor

Their worldviews forming before my eyes through their weary mother’s voice:

« Dieu n’aime pas quand on joue avec la nourriture » (God doesn’t like when we play with food)

She’s doing her best with what she’s been given

Heart pinching, my silent prayer rises

—May they know the truth of what (and who) You love.
